Why kitchen ventilation is essential for health and comfort.

"Why is it important to have a good quality kitchen fan?"

Effective kitchen ventilation is crucial for creating a healthy, comfortable cooking space. It efficiently removes smoke, heat, and cooking odors while preventing grease buildup and harmful pollutants. By controlling humidity, it also protects against mold growth and damage to cabinets and appliances. With proper ventilation, you enhance air quality, ensuring a safer, more enjoyable kitchen environment.

What’s the difference between commercial and domestic kitchen fans?

Domestic kitchen fans are typically designed for everyday cooking in the home, where airflow, temperatures and operating hours are relatively low.

Commercial kitchen fans need to handle much more demanding conditions, including higher airflow rates, increased temperatures, grease-laden air and longer operating hours. This means correct fan selection is essential to ensure the system performs effectively and reliably.

“Why can’t I use a standard extract fan in a commercial kitchen?”

Commercial kitchen extract can contain heat, moisture, grease and other cooking contaminants. The fan therefore needs to be selected for the actual operating conditions, not simply the required airflow. DW/172 also highlights the importance of suitable fan construction and motor specification where higher temperatures and humidity are involved.

“Is a kitchen extract fan the same as a smoke extract fan?”

Not necessarily. A kitchen extract fan is designed for everyday operation, removing heat, moisture, grease-laden air and cooking contaminants from the kitchen.

A smoke extract fan has an additional job. Where it forms part of a smoke-control system, it must be tested and classified to continue operating at specified elevated temperatures during a fire.

Some high-temperature fans can perform both duties, providing everyday kitchen extraction alongside certified high-temperature performance.

"What should I look for in a kitchen fan?"

When looking for a commercial kitchen fan, several essential factors should be considered to ensure proper ventilation, safety, and efficiency.

  1. Size and Capacity (CFM) for proper air movement.
  2. Type of Fan (upblast, downblast, sidewall) based on layout.
  3. Noise Level to maintain a comfortable working environment.
  4. Energy Efficiency to reduce costs.
  5. Compliance with Local Codes for safety and regulations.
  6. Durability of materials like stainless steel for longevity.
  7. Ease of Maintenance for cleaning and repairs.
  8. Grease Management with filters to prevent buildup.
  9. Ventilation Compatibility with existing systems.
  10. Fire Safety Features like automatic shutoff or fire suppression.

These factors ensure safety, efficiency, and air quality in your kitchen.
