What is MVHR

What is MVHR?

MVHR stands for Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery.

- Extracts stale, moist air from rooms like kitchens and bathrooms.

- Brings in fresh outdoor air, filters it, and distributes it throughout the building.

- Transfers heat from the outgoing air to the incoming air using a heat exchanger - meaning minimal energy is wasted.

- Helps maintain good indoor air quality while saving on heating costs.

Can I open the windows if I have an MVHR system?

Yes, you can open the windows at any time. The MVHR system will continue to operate in the background. However, keep in mind that doing so may slightly reduce the system’s efficiency, as it’s designed to maintain indoor temperature and air quality with closed windows. This could lead to some heat loss in winter or reduced cooling in summer.

Does the MVHR system run 24/7 all year round?

Yes, the system is designed to run automatically 24/7 throughout the year, with no need for manual adjustments. However, you can override the settings if needed—for example, during gatherings or events when there are more people in the home and increased ventilation may be beneficial.

For optimal airflow and comfort, supply valves should ideally be placed:

- Near a fireplace or stove

- Close to a window

- Above a radiator

Where possible, avoid positioning supply valves directly above areas where people sit or rest for extended periods, such as sofas or beds, to prevent drafts and discomfort.

Extract Air Valve Positioning

Extract valves should be installed in ‘wet’ rooms such as kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms.

For best performance:

  • Position the valve close to sources of moisture, such as showers, sinks, or cooktops.

  • If an assembly or layout drawing is provided, use it as a guide for accurate placement of the valve and distribution box.
